Lewis DelRosso Alarmed and Disgusted by Loss of 11,000 Jobs
1/25/2021
OAKMONT – Rep. Carrie Lewis DelRosso (R-Allegheny/Westmoreland) issued the following statement regarding President Joe Biden’s decision to eliminate 11,000 current and future jobs in Pennsylvania and other states by stopping the Keystone XL Pipeline project:

“On his first day in office, President Biden already started beating up the working class, the men and women who are the backbone of our anemic economy. At least 1,000 people and their families will now struggle to collect unemployment to sustain their families with another 10,000 future workers who will never be employed. Is shutting down work without a plan part of Biden’s Build Back Better initiative? What’s the plan to strengthen our economy without continued loss?

“Pennsylvania’s unemployment compensation system is already such a mess, forcing people to wait weeks on top of weeks or even months to receive a payment that is so desperately needed. Just since I’ve been in office, I’ve heard from so many residents of the district who are fighting with the broken system. And to needlessly add more people to it? It’s cruel, and people deserve better.

“As if the jobs killed by this decision alone aren’t enough, the president’s decision sets a precedent. It’s not just pipeline jobs… people with energy jobs will be impacted too. It’s going to hit our whole state. Pennsylvania’s fossil fuel industry will continue to be under attack.

“We need to prioritize the working class, which has already been one of my top missions. I have been advocating for the restrictions on our restaurants and bars to be minimized.

“Gov. Tom Wolf needs to work with the Allegheny County Health Department to come up with a plan that focuses on both the health of community members and their ability to earn a living, not sending the COVID police around each week to punish people who are simply trying to survive. After all, these businesses are still forced to pay licensing fees to the state.

“It’s time to seriously think about what matters, and to me, the last thing I want to do when people have been hurting for nearly a year is to destroy their opportunity to keep food on the table. We need to lift people up, not hold them down.”
